Tamara Paris + Matt Fontaine's performance collective The High Kindergarten Performance Group, or HKPG, present their new work SPADE COOLEY’S NIGHTMARE at Open Circle Theater from February 4th through February 19th, 2005, Friday and Saturday nights at 11:00 PM.
SPADE COOLEY’S NIGHTMARE, is a minimalist performance event based on the life of 40’s Western Swing star “Spade” Cooley, who rode to the heights of fame, only to watch it all slip away. One night in a Thorazine and booze induced rage he tortured and ultimately stomped his wife to death in front of their 14-year old daughter and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Ten years later, he was released on furlough to play a concert for a police benefit one month before he was due to be paroled. After a standing ovation, he dropped dead of a heart attack.
A work with teeth, a work that doesn’t pander, and that is not politically naïve, this story is about the nature of evil, the cruel price of fame, and the darkness seething beneath America’s cultural history. It is different than anything else you’ve ever seen.
